Happy New Year

Welcome to 2008, the Year of the Earth Rat.

Given that I'm a paltry Sheep you can imagine how little I am looking forward to this year. Also, given how it's starting out, perhaps even less so.

Although, I'm not Chinese, so I probably shouldn't pay any attention to that. After all, I'm more on the Greek-ish side. So let's see how I fare there...

Sagittarius.

I love the whole work-a-holic thing both of them reference. Me? Overworked? P'shaw, what nonsense! :P

In other news...

I'm not going to mention car problems because they're so obviously there. The sheer thought of bringing them up again will only make me more irritable. Let's just say, "Broken Black Bird's Eye Maplewood paneling."

To avoid being overworked, I've decided to join a Roller Derby league. The San Joaquin Valley Vixens. Now to dig out my roller skates from my closet and get all dialed in. Try-outs are tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I'm toying between two names: "Mad Donna" (a play on Madonna), or "Killah Knightley" (Keira Knightley). Hm.

Recent travel included a trip to Hawaii for X-mas and another to Vegas for New Years.

At Hawaii, I surfed North Shore. Oh la la. I wish I could say it was like 50 ft over head, but, really, there was no swell and it was blown out. I've seen bigger waves in the Delta when I worked at Fish&Game. The Polynesian cultural center was pretty cool. Mai-tai's are stiff. And the condo at Turtle Bay Resort was pretty darn cool.

Oh yeah, my flight out of Hawaii was cancelled. As such, the airline hooked us up with a hotel and some vouchers for dinner, lunch, breakfast. And, best of all, another round-trip ticket anywhere they fly! Yay!

My Vegas trip? Well... what goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas... as they say.

PC + Mac Gaming

So, back in the day, I used to be a very active PC gamer. Running "Network Games" LAN parties and everything. I even have a legacy in regards to this. The thing is, there was this PC Game "rut" that happened. Say, at around 2000. 2001. Or maybe I just got a cushy government job and tried to cleanse myself of this gaming addiction, and well, we all know how well that worked out. At around this time, the Mac came out with a *ix-based operating system. So what's any girl supposed to do, but switch OSes? In the end, if you can't "ls" at a command prompt, you aren't running an OS worth a damn anyway.

So I switched.

For about 6 years, I've been very happy with this. I even bought myself a sweet G5 to show how happy I was.

Thing is... now PC games are good again and they look to be on the upward swing.. that, and I miss all my virtual-friends there.. It's like we'll be talking and they'll be like, "Oh you haven't played this????" (weird stare)... so I feel guilty. Everyone else is doing it... . .

So I'm going intel chipset. Dual booting. I'm convinced of this. I can't abandon the Mac completely.. but for Hellgate: London I'd do just about anything. Except, well.. I'll leave that to your imagination.

The dilemma is thus:
  • Power Mac Desktops feature an antiquated design. I just can't justify buying the same looking machine. I just can't. There's something about, "Well, why don't you fly to Akihabara and buy the parts off the black market and build a new intel machine yourself? It'd probably be cheaper, more fun, and look about the same." And, really, that'd be pretty funny.

  • The new iMacs are sweet looking but I don't think they have a good enough video card. Nor do I know how easy it would be to upgrade said video card. Also, I plan on going back for my PhD in a year, or so, so having a reduced footprint machine is great for travel/home use. My G5 takes up 90% of the space in my trunk, I have no back seat, and my passenger seat is for my purse. So, it's a bit of a pain in my ass, y'know? I like the reduced footprint of the iMac.. but the inability to upgrade? G'ah....! :(

  • I know I'm going to wait for January (new systems released) but... to iMac or not to iMac, that is the question.

Anyone out there game with a dual-booted Mac have some ideas? Help!

    It begins

For a while now, people have been lamenting my lack of online blog-o-sphere presence. It was always one of these things that I "should" do because "they" would enjoy it or find value in it. This argument was always unsatisfying for me.

What do I care what they think?

But then I decided that, well, maybe I should care. That is, perhaps the only reason why I didn't start blogging sooner was because of some juvenile fear of rejection. "What if no one reads it?! Gasp - does that mean I'm boring?" So maybe this is an attempt at presenting part of who I am to the world -- knowing full-well that some will reject and others might rejoice. Or maybe, I simply didn't have anything to say before. Isn't that a scary thought, to get on the virtual-stage and come up blank? Me? No opinion on something? Ha!

Whatever the case may be, here it is...

My own personal bandwidth-waste. And what a scrumptious waste it is.
